Welcome back to another post! We are so grateful to have all of you and are eager to share all that we know! This post will be added to semi-regularly, but we wanted to give you something to get you started. All things have magical properties, but today we are going to channel our inner Green Witch and show you some of those amazing metaphysical properties found in common houseplants and herbs! A lot of this information is available on the web, but it doesn’t carry the same panache as when it is written by us! Below is the beautiful greenhouse in which we had the pleasure of working before we started law school Witch dreamland.

What Are Houseplants, Anyways?
Some of you may be looking at your thumbs and saying “well mine are as black as night. I can’t grow anything!” You are not alone! They are living beings and like puppies and kittens, require special knowledge. Knowledge, we hope to get you started on today! One thing you should know is that houses are like Alcatraz to plants. They want to be outside! (Yes, even the so-called houseplant). Plants, typically tropical, are often called houseplants because they require very little sun. Mind you, we said "very little" NOT "no sun." “But the tropics are hot and sunny!” Yes, but these buggers grow under the canopies of trees and are shielded from the sun. They will get sunburnt if you place them in a sunny window! Yes, you read that right, the sun will burn their leaves! So, do you plant a favor and if I say “partial shade” or "part shade" don’t put that little baby in a window that gets sun all day.
Fun fact. Almost any plant can be an indoor plant, even succulents, queens of the sun. If you really want an “outdoor” plant indoors you can acclimate it to your house’s environment. This usually takes about a month. All you do, starting with one hour, bring your plant inside, and then after that hour is up, put it back outside. Repeat until you reach a full 24 hours and then your plant will be acclimated to its new home. Note. Plants are like people. They hate change. All forms of it. Please put your baby in the same place each time you bring it inside or you will have to start over!
The Sun v The Shade
“All plants love the sun!” Fake news. Plants, as you may have guessed, are kind of like a lot of things, and this time they are like fish! Some fish live deep in the ocean and others live close to the surface. Depends on the fish. Depends on the plant. Essentially you’ll see things like “shade,” “partial shade,” “part sun,” "indirect sun," and “full sun”. These are all how they sound. A good habit to get into if you want to be an avid gardener is to create a spreadsheet of your plants needs and use that to create a schedule. Apps like Sweepy are great not only for cleaning, but also remembering to water your babies!
Water
Plants need varying amounts of water. You can drown a plant and you can give different plant not enough. But how do you know how much water? Don’t worry I tell you the water requirements for each plant below. See? You’re well on your way to becoming an expert gardener. A good rule of "green" thumb (hehe) is to stick your finger in the dirt. No, not on top of, but in the yes, dirty dirt! Then if it is dry give'r a drink. If it is moist water him on the next cycle you have scheduled. You'll eventually get to know your plants like you know when your doggo needs to go to the O-U-T-S-I-D-E. We have to spell if cuz our pupper loses his brain if we mention it.
Soil
Do not underestimate the importance of soil! Good soil is vital and there are so many kinds out there. For outdoor and indoor gardening of any kind use Fafard potting mix. If you want to plant in the ground, then mix the potting mix with your dirt 50/50. Organic soil always for herbs and veggies. Be careful about the ingredients in your organic soil. We recommend Ocean Forest from FoxFarm. Some of them stink!
