The Power to Be-witch

An Annotated Guide to Sigils

Sigils are my favorite way to focus my energy. I prefer them to runes, because they are inherently more personal. Runes are clad in hundreds of years of history and that’s where their power comes from. Depending on the spell you can choose to use runes or sigils. In this post we will be talking about my two favorite ways to draw sigils.

Saturn’s Magic Square

There are several magic squares for the planets, the sun, and the moon. Saturn is the happy medium amongst them, but ideally you’ll want to use the planet’s square that matches your spell. Here’s a link for your reference on the meanings behind the planets: https://labyrinthos.co/blogs/astrology-horoscope-zodiac-signs/astrology-planets-and-their-meanings-planet-symbols-and-cheat-sheet

I highly recommend Tina Gong’s work. Magic squares are cool numerology magick. For Saturn’s each row or column adds up to 15, which represents curiosity, exploration, idealism, and family.

To start, you will need to either draw or print off Saturn’s square.

Then, you will want to pick a word or phrase that has to do with your spell. For example, courage. This word is small enough so you do not have to do anything else. Alternatively, if you pick “I am courageous at my work,” you will want to remove the vowels and any letters that repeat. You would be left with “CGSWK.” For our example we will use the latter.

Next, we will write out 1-9 on the first row because that is how many squares are in Saturn’s square.

Then in the following rows you write out the alphabet starting under “1”.

Now, we write out the corresponding letters’ numbers. In our case, that would be 3,7,1,5,2.

Starting with “3” we make our first mark in the center of the 3.

Draw a line from that dot in 3 to the center of 7. Repeat for 1,5, and 2.

This is your basic shape. You can make it more curvy and pretty. Completely up to you, but I have found that keeping this sigil makes it easier to carve into a candle. And there you have it Saturn’s Magic Sigil.

Personal Sigil

This is my favorite one to do. It involves some creativity. To start, you take a word or phrase like “courage” and remove the vowels and double letters. That leaves you with

CRG. I recommend using capital letters, because they are easier to work with. Also apologies in advance because I had to use the paint app since my photoshop crashed haha.

Then, you arrange them in a way to your liking. See below.

Finally, you get creative. Play with the shapes of the letters. Add meaningful symbols. Make it your own work. Don't be afraid to break up the letters and use the lines and such. And that’s it!
