Writing spells when you first start out can be really difficult for one main reason: new witches really struggle with understanding different spell methods and how they can be used to generate a manifestation. Luckily, we are here to hopefully shed some light on different methods of spell work! This is not an exhaustive list, but merely a place for you to get started in understanding how spells work and why they work the way they do.
Charging Crystals
Purpose: Depending on the crystal one can either put negative energy into a crystal that will store that energy and not radiate it (again, don’t touch anything baneful with your bare skin), or charge positive energy into a crystal that will radiate that energy.
How To:
Choose an appropriate crystal for your intention
Are you wanting to use the crystal to attract a specific energy or are you wanting to use the crystal to capture a specific energy?
Cleanse the crystal (smoke, selenite, moon, etc)
Choose a candle color that matches your intention. See our guide on candles!
Anoint the candle with herbs and/or oils that match your intention or narrow down your intention for the universe to better understand what exactly it is that you want
Draw a sigil if you so choose to
Light the candle
Imagine the elemental power of the candle and the metaphysical energies of your herbs/oils infusing with the crystal’s energy to generate a specific manifestation
Allow the candle to completely burn down
Put the crystal somewhere where the energy will interact with your energy
I.e. your purse, pillowcase, car, office drawer, etc
Talismans
Purpose: to radiate a specific energy
How To:
Charge a crystal
Make it into a piece of jewelry so that you can wear it as you need it.
Candles
Purpose: to release/banish energy, charge a crystal/object, or transform elemental energy into personal energy
How To: See our post on candle magick!
Charging Objects
Purpose: to imbue an object with a specific intention
How To:
Way #1
Charge under the full moon in a specific zodiac and/or day of the week
If it helps you set your intention, write exactly what you want the object to do on a piece of paper and set the crystal on top of the paper to charge under the moonlight.
Way #2
Anoint a corresponding candle with appropriate oils and herbs
Light the candle
Funnel the energy from the candle into object
Container (Jar) Spells
Purpose: Attract a specific energy to a space
How To:
Gather the appropriate metaphysical ingredients for your intention
Cleanse the Jar
As you place each ingredient in the container/jar, visualize the jar now radiating that energy
Close the jar
Seal with wax ONLY IF you do not want the energy to leave the jar
Particularly useful for spells involving baneful intentions. Be careful not to touch the jar if doing a baneful working.
Loose Incense Spells
Purpose: Release energy into the universe or absorb energy into yourself
How To:
Gather the appropriate metaphysical ingredients for your intention
Light a charcoal disc and place it in your cauldron
Use a mortar and pestle (optional) to crush your dried ingredients
Don’t put crystals in your cauldron or they may explode or give off toxic chemicals
You can add essential oils to your incense after you’ve added the dry ingredients
Mix your crushed ingredients
Sprinkle evenly over the charcoal disc and allow smoke to rise
Visualize and Meditate
Release → Energy you don’t want anymore or energy you want the universe to put into your life. Visualize the smoke as energy being carried off from you or across the universe.
Whether you're releasing energy from yourself or purposefully putting that energy out into the universe is highly dependant on keeping your intention pure and consistent
Absorb → Visualize the smoke as the energy you are trying to attract and inhale it and visualize it transforming into your personal energy.
Bay Leaves
Purpose: to attract energy from the universe (luck, specific intentions, etc)
How To:
Gather a candle to match your intention (typically green or gold), a cauldron/heat proof bowl, a colored marker to match your intention. and bay leaves
On each bay leaf, using the marker, write down a specific energy you are trying to attract
Burn the bay leaf and place it in the cauldron
As it burns, visualize that energy going across the universe, getting what you need, and coming back to you to release that energy to you
Do this as many times as you feel necessary, but don’t just write “luck” or “prosperity” on a leaf; you have to be specific!
Bag Spells
Purpose: to attract or absorb a specific energy so that it interacts with you. Note. Bags are not good for anything you are trying to banish, because you cannot seal them like you can with jars.
How To:
Cleanse and charge your ingredients
Put ingredients in the bag. It may help to say aloud why you are putting a particular ingredient into the bag or call upon your patron deity and thank them for their help in the spell.
Tie the bag shut
Put it in a place where it will interact with the energy you want to attract or dispel.
Oils
Purpose: To attract a specific energy or to prevent a specific energy from attaching to you.
How To:
Pick a base/carrier oil (almond, coconut, shea, jioba, avocado, etc). Always check to make sure the carrier oil will not muck up your intention with its metaphysical properties. Almond oil is usually a safe bet.
If choosing to use some essential oils for their metaphysical properties in your oil, add in and stir.
If choosing to use dried herbs/plants/flowers, you may want to heat the oil concoction to allow for the plants’ oils to imbue into the concoction for smelling purposes only. Heating or lack thereof will not affect your spell. If you do heat the oil, put in some water to keep it from burning. Allow the water to evaporate completely before storing.
Allow to cool if you chose the heat option
Store in a glass vial/jar
Feathers
Purpose: to attract something or release something
How To:
Charge the feathers with your intention to attract or release
Leave out on a windy day and allow the universe to take them to their destination
Tarot Spells
Purpose: To attract a certain energy represented by the card
How To:
Choose an intention
Choose an applicable card
Charge the card
Place in an area where it will attract that energy you want to manifest
Cord Cuttings
Purpose: To remove a fixation on a person or object
How To:
Get a candle to represent you and another candle to represent the other person or an object
Anoint the candles as you see fit with ingredients that represent the situation
Choose a type of cord based on its metaphysical properties that is appropriate
Tie the cord around the two candles
Light both candles
This part is a balancing act. Ideally, the candles will burn down at a similar rate and time. This means you appropriately distributed your energy between them. It will very rarely take equal amounts of energy for both candles. One candle will almost always require more energy (the one who is holding on the most) and one will require less (the one who is ready to let go). Typically, if you’re the one doing the cord cutting, your candle will require less energy, unless you are not ready to let go yourself.
Allow the candles to burn down completely. Do not interrupt the spell or your concentration on balancing the energies. If done correctly, the candles will burn down at the same time or very close together. If one candle burns faster, it means you’re not putting enough energy toward the other candle, and that the person in question has or will let you go. If the wax blends, it means that there is still a connection. Ideally, you want the wax to either not touch at all or there to be a clear line between the two. If you find out there is still a connection, but the candles burned down at the same time, either neither of you are committing to letting each other go, or that you simply didn’t foster enough energy through the candles. Use your intuition to determine this.
Freezer Spells
Purpose: To literally freeze a person’s behavior or attitude in place (or if you’re doing the Hoodoo version, to freeze a person’s tounge)
How To:
On a piece of paper, write the person’s name or a letter to the person.
Charge the paper using a method described in object charging
Place in the freezer. This will freeze a person into place until you release them. For example, if a man you know is beating his wife and you place him in the freezer, it will only cause him to continue his behavior, but it won’t get any worse
How To Do the Hoodoo Version (closed):
On an object that represents that person or piece of paper write the name of the person who has let their tongue slip or will do so.
Charge the object with your intention by summoning YOUR hoodoo ancestors (if you don’t have any, please see our post on closed practices and how you can safely execute a spell with ancestors that are not your own)
Petition your hoodoo ancestors to bind the tongue of the person who has been speaking about you or will speak about you.
Link their energy to the object or paper
Place in the freezer to charge and give your ancestors the tools they need to see the spell through
Unfreeze when the situation has passed to respect your ancestors time and attention, and give them an offering of thanks. (This type of spell will keep someone from gossiping about you, and if they do break through the initial spell, your ancestors are there to burn their tongue. This typically will result in mouth blisters, but can include other ailments as well related to the mouth: herpes, strep, etc.
Deity Spells
Purpose: To transform divine energy or personal energy into a different form of energy
How To:
Summon your patron. (See our post on deities)
Ask for some of their energy that you’ve earned through devotional acts of service to them.
Work with said deity to transform their divine energy into personal energy. We find using a candle or a wand as a conduit particularly helpful.
Use the energy they’ve given you to continue your working
Combining Spell Types for the Mother of All Spells
Sometimes, you’ll find yourself in a position that requires more than one spell type. Perhaps, you have a really cruddy boss and you need him or her to leave you alone, but you’re also depressed because of this treatment from your boss. Since the two are related or are of the same issue, you can combine a few spell types instead of picking different days to do spells for the same issue. You can also choose to do them separately if you are not confident in your ability to separate energies during a spell.
However, for those of you that are confident in your energy manipulation abilities, you may want to consider doing one spell instead of several. This saves you time and leaves your spell calendar available for other workings.
In our example, we have a cruddy boss that is zero’d in on you and your work and that has made you depressed. So, we may choose to do a cord cutting. Cool. Step one, get the boss to leave you alone accomplished. However, since your depression is related to your poor working environment, you may want to take care of that as well. So, you can charge a crystal, object, jar, etc. In our example, we will charge a mundane object. You have a couple of ways you can go about trying to rid yourself of your depression. You could, for example, charge a pen that you use often to radiate positive energy, so everything you do with it, you will feel like you can do it. You could even charge a particularly nasty email (paper copy) from your boss and burn it to banish the depression associated with it. Or, here us out, you could do both!
So, now that we’ve got our candles lit and our cord tied around those candles, we can begin setting up the rest of the parts of the spell. Highlight the part of the email that hurts you the most. Place your pen around the cord cutting stage. Fold the paper up. Anoint it with an essential oil like sage if you want to. Then, wait for the cord to begin to burn. As the cord burns, light the paper on fire and place it in a fire safe dish around your cord cutting stage. Then, while the cord is still burning, combine the negative energies of the paper and the cord and transform that energy into positive energy. If it helps, you can anoint your pen with rosemary essential oil to promote and attract positivity.
If you are not confident in your transformation abilities, you can (in advance) petition a deity to assist you in your working by performing intentional devotional acts for that deity. Do note, however, that one does simply direct dial a deity. Check out our post on deities for more information on how to work with and summon a deity.
